Johannes received his Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1993 from Stuttgart University and worked there later as a researcher. From 2001 – 2015 he was acting partner of thinkstep AG, developing its sustainable construction business including EPD and building certification services. He has more than 25 years experience in Life Cycle Assessment.

In 2007 Johannes was co-initiator and founding member of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and served as a board member on a voluntary base for many years. In 2016 Johannes was appointed as CEO of the German Sustainable Building Council.

Johannes was re-elected to the board of directors of the World Green Building Council in 2020, having previously served on the board from 2010 to 2016.

He is chairman of the supervisory board of the Helios PV energy cooperative and a member of the board of curators of the knowledge foundation norocketscience earth.

Johannes is member of the IBU advisory board, IBU is the German Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) system operator, he was member of the European Commission’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) technical advisory board.
